Penetration testing, or pentesting, is the work of finding security weaknesses in a website, application, network or server by imitating the methods of a real attacker with your permission. The goal is to find and close weak points before someone with bad intentions finds them. A test consists of defining the scope, gathering information, searching for and verifying vulnerabilities, reporting findings and retesting after fixes. Scope varies with the number of systems, whether testing is done with credentials or from the outside, and whether a live system or a test environment is used.
What to check when hiring for penetration testing
- Define scope and permissions in writing: which addresses, which dates and which methods will be tested? Testing without permission is illegal.
- If possible, work on a test environment with the same structure instead of the live system; if testing live, take a backup and agree on a time window.
- Ask what the report contains: severity of issues, how to reproduce them and how to fix them, not just an automated scan output.
- Sign a non-disclosure agreement; found vulnerabilities and any data accessed must not be shared with third parties.
- Have the offer state whether a retest is done after the fixes.
- Ask which methodology is used (well-known frameworks such as OWASP) and about the relevant experience.
penetration testing: frequently asked questions
Is a penetration test the same as a vulnerability scan?
No. A vulnerability scan lists known issues with an automated tool. In a penetration test an expert tries to actually exploit them, looks for logic flaws and interprets the findings.
Can my site crash during the test?
There is a small risk. That is why scope, time window and backups are agreed in advance and risky tests are run on a test environment where possible.
How often should a penetration test be done?
Before and after major releases and at regular intervals is good practice. Compliance requirements in your sector can also set the frequency.
