Frequently asked questions
How long does a penetration test take?
From a few days to several weeks depending on scope. The number of pages, user roles and systems to be tested sets the duration.
Can the test harm my live system?
It can affect load or data if not carefully planned. Ask for work in a test environment where possible, and for timing and limits to be agreed in advance if it must run on the live system.
Is written permission required?
Yes. Only systems you own or are authorised to test are in scope; defining the scope and permission in writing protects both you and the expert.
What should the report look like?
Each finding should state its impact, how to reproduce it and how to fix it. You can also ask for an executive summary.
